Cramming? This cafe won’t allow you to miss your deadline
Your deadline is one important factor that you try not to miss when getting things done. If you’re looking for the perfect place to work, Manuscript Writing Cafe offers services for you to accomplish your tasks as it has one goal: you can’t leave until your work is done.
When you enter the Tokyo-based cafe, customers will receive a slip of paper where they have to write their names, writing goals, and how long they need to finish their work. It only has 10 seats reserved for writers, editors, manga artists, and anyone struggling just to meet their deadlines.
The staff will be held accountable to their customers, who can choose to select one of the three levels of progress checks: 1) Mild – get a verbal confirmation when you pay at the counter; 2) Normal – get a progress check every hour; 3) Hard – feel silent pressure from staff who will often stand behind you.
The Manuscript Writing Cafe recently opened this April and it can only offer unlimited coffee and tea. Customers are charged 130 yen (around P53) for the first 30 minutes and 300 yen (P122) for every hour. They are also allowed to bring their own food or have snacks delivered.
Takuya Kawai, the cafe’s owner, said explained that its strict rules could help individuals focus more. The 52-year old said, ‘It (the café) went viral on social media and people are saying that the rules are scary or that it feels like you’re being watched from behind.’
‘But actually, instead of monitoring (customers), I’m here to support them,’ Kawai continued. ‘I would like everyone to finish their work. As a result, what they thought would take a day actually was completed in three hours, or the tasks that usually take three hours were done in one hour at this café.’
