Canada, New Zealand, are Filipinos’ top migration preference after elections

When the partial and unofficial election results were released on the evening of May 9, a series of trending topics and hashtags emerged on Twitter: ayoko na, g*go ba kayo, nakakaiyak, walang matutulog, and New Zealand. The latter topic stemmed from online users who consider migrating after seeing the presumptive winning candidates.

According to Google Trends, the Philippines had a spike for different questions in relation to migrating. Included in the top breakout searches reflect the Twitter trend “How to migrate to New Zealand”, while other queries include how to move to Canada, Australia, and Japan. There were also searches on the “easiest” and “best countries to migrate to.

Searches for how to migrate to Canada were at their peak beginning at 8:30 PM on May 9, until they died down and rose again on May 10 at 12:08 PM. The thought of migrating seems to keep Filipinos up at night since it spiked again on May 11 at 4:08 AM.

Meanwhile, the top locations where the searches were being made are Metro Manila, Calabarzon, Bicol, Central Visayas, and Central Luzon. Google Trends categorize this based on when the term was most popular during the specified time frame.

On Twitter, there were Filipino users who openly expressed that they will consider moving their whole family abroad for a “safer future”. Others couldn’t explore the option since it was costly.

There were also Filipinos who chose to stay in the country and continue to fight. One of which was Filipino singer Zild Benitez who said, ‘Walang aalis ng Pinas magkita kita tayo sa kalsada.’
