Imelda feels like she’s 29 years old, says Sen. Imee Marcos

Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. was officially proclaimed president-elect of the Philippines on May 25. It seems like there’s no one who’s more ecstatic than his mother, former first lady Imelda Marcos. In an interview, Sen. Imee shared how Imelda appears to be more lively, comparable to someone who’s only 29 years old.

‘Siyempre nanay ko sobrang excited, sobrang excited niya at tuwang-tuwa siya sa mga pangyayari,’ Sen. Imee added as she spoke to reporters at the House of Representatives. ‘She’s suddenly able to hear, to walk, lahat ng sakit-sakit noong panahon ng COVID lahat ng nararamdaman biglang nawala.’

Sen. Imee, Marcos Jr.’s older sister, said that their family is “grateful for a second chance” after being “opressed” and “mocked” for a long time. She explained ‘Medyo mabigat ang pinagdaanan ng aming pamilya… bukod pa do’n sa pangungutya at pang-aapi, sabihin na natin, eh medyo hirap talaga ‘yong pamilya namin for the past almost four decades.’

Speaking with CNN Philippines, Sen. Imee expressed that the Marcoses are grateful for the majority vote. But she said, ‘The return to Malacañang, galing na kami doon eh, kung tutuusin hindi masyadong mahalaga ‘yung pagbabalik sa Palasyo.’

The senator also stressed that the “legacy” of her father is what their family hopes to clarify. She noted, ‘What’s most important to us is, of course, our name, the family name that has become so controversial, and so difficult at times to bear.’

When asked what her role would be given that Marcos Jr. secured the country’s top post, Sen. Imee said that she would be a “super Ate“. She noted that she doesn’t eye an additional role apart from her legislative position in the upper house. She was at the canvassing of votes as she heads the Senate committee on electoral reforms.
