This scientist is the first Filipino to win a UN award for disaster risk reduction

Filipinos have pioneered in many fields — Maria Ressa won the country’s first Nobel Peace Prize and Carlos Yulo was the first PH gymnast to win multiple medals in the world championships. Recently, scientist Glenn S. Banaguas became the first Filipino to receive the United Nations’ Sasakawa Award for his contribution in disaster risk reduction.

The Climate Smart and Disaster Resilient ASEAN awarded Banaguas during the ceremony in Bali, Indonesia on May 25. He said in his speech, ‘I extend my thanks and gratitude to the organizers of the UN Sasakawa Award for recognizing Climate Smart Philippines’ efforts to empower people from all walks of life to develop evidence-based, humane, and gender-responsive solutions.’

Out of the 200 nominees worldwide, Banaguas received the award for leading the Climate Smart Philippines efforts. The program gathers scientific experts to tackle and help prevent disaster risks and damage that threaten the Philippines from climate change.

The Climate Smart and Disaster Resilient ASEAN also noted that it’s their first time to award a lone Filipino in the Sasakawa Award’s 35-year history. Apart from Banaguas individual win, Save the Children – Philippines also brought home an award in the Organization category.

The Sasakawa Award is given to an individual or institution that has made active efforts to reduce disaster risk in their community and advocates for disaster risk reduction. The overarching theme of the awards this year is “recognizing excellence in reducing disaster risk for a safer, more sustainable world.”
