Why is the Internet suddenly nostalgic about Tropical Hut?

There are many things that could possibly bring back memories from the past. Over the weekend, one of the reasons that triggered people’s nostalgia was Tropical Hut. Yup, the OG Filipino burger joint that has been around for 60 years suddenly trended.

John Paul Tanyag, a market surveillance analyst, shared photos of Tropical Hut’s Escolta branch on Twitter. He reminisced the days he and his family went to Tropical Hut along Baymart Plaza in Lower Bicutan. He said that the old fast-food chain was competing with the likes of Jollibee and Chowking before.

He added, ‘They have so much in their menu. And sana in five, ten, twenty years, they will still be there.’

Following Tanyag’s viral post, online users shared the good times they had at Tropical Hut — from childhood memories, their college years, to the special people they went with.

One user shared that Tropical Hut has 50% off its menu every 7th of the month. Another one expressed that they would choose it over other mainstream fast-food chains. They added, ‘Ang fave ko iyong hotdog sandwich nila na may melted slab of cheese AT quick fried beef. Pak na pak.’

According to Esquire PH, Tropical Hut has been operating since 1962, when it started as a coffee shop inside a grocery store. Meanwhile, a JobStreet profile overview said it was acquired by Mercury Group of Companies, Inc., founded by Mariano Que in 1972. This explains why Tropical Hut branches are seemingly located next to Mercury Drug outlets.

Even if Tropical Hut doesn’t garner great attention throughout the past years, it kept its signature burger meals on its menu. Compared to other local fast-food joints, its menu also includes sandwiches, toast, and omelette for breakfast, spring chicken, and sides like fruit and macaroni salad.
