Martial Law film “Katips” wants to prove history is not chismis
History is not like chismis.
One of the most argued topics online is whether or not the Marcoses have been lying or telling the truth about Martial Law, paying their taxes, and even their educational attainment.
Movies such as The Kingmaker, a documentary by foreign filmmaker Lauren Greenfield that does not “respect” the opinions of loyalists and apologists, are seen as a vessel of “paninira” by them.
Hence why the Marcos camp, together with writer-director Darryl Yap and Viva Films, plan to use “art” as a platform to “confuse,” as stated in a statement by Senator Imee Marcos.
The dramedy, Maid in Malacañang, said to be told in the eyes of a “reliable source,” is set to hit the screens on August 3.
Two stories. One truth.
However, another movie about Martial Law is set to hit the cinemas on the same date.
Katips: The Movie, a musical drama directed by award-winning filmmaker Atty. Vince Tañada looks to share the experiences of student activists during the regime of the Marcoses.
The film is based on the 2016 hit theatre show titled Katips: Ang Mga Bagong Katipunero, which actually won the 2016 Aliw Awards for Best Musical Performance.
First screened on November 27 and December 3, 2021, the film bagged major nominations at the FAMAS (Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences Awards): Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Screenplay, and Best Director.
The film features Atty. Vince himself, the grandson of former Senator Lorenzo Tañada and a Martial Law victim. Jerome Ponce, Nicole Asensio, Mon Confiado, and many more theatre actors round out the cast.
It is not coincidental that the cinematic release of Katips is on the same date as The Maid in Malacañang on August 3.
“Nilabanan ko talaga yung Maid in Malacañang,” Tañada shared in a press conference on July 28.
“This is about the truth, and nobody can invalidate my personal experience as a victim of martial law.” Atty. Vince states.
