Like love, too much [of] resilience will kill us
Why resilience is bad for Filipinos
The Philippines is known for countless things. We have personalities like Hidilyn Diaz, Lea Salonga, and Catriona Gray who brought us pride doing their craft. Tourists flock to breath-taking areas of Coron and Boracay. Sinigang, halo-halo, and tortang talong continuously receive great reviews from international palates.
And who are we Filipinos if not resilient? Globally, we are noted for being a nation of impeccable resilience. Whether the country’s hit by a supertyphoon, powerful quakes, a worldwide pandemic, you name it. We will come back right up against any adversity that’s going to come our way because of — say it again one more time — resilience.
It’s one thing to laud people for resilience; it’s another to hint on them to rely on it when things are going to shit. Resilience can only take us so far. It is pointless and useless on its own.
Suggesting that resilience is enough for people to recover from the tough situations they’re going through is foolish. What’s the point of electing public government officials?
The governance we are most due
As a democratic country, our government officials are called public servants for a reason. They serve the masses’ interest. Not the neighboring countries’. Not their political parties’. And certainly not their own.
As perfectly put by the words of former VP Leni Robredo, “the very rationale of governance [is] to make the burdens of our people a little easier to bear, to make their dreams a little easier to reach, [and] to uplift their lives the best way we can”.
They signed up for a job that will make or break a nation. It is their responsibility to give 110% justice to the oath they took: to consecrate themselves in and to the service of the Nation.
What the government has offered (so far)
You’d probably say that no government is perfect and they will always commit mistakes. And there is nothing wrong with little mishaps here and there. But to do so unfailingly is an indignity and mockery to the people they swore to serve.
The rising case of CoVID-19 infection? Let’s spend around ₱370 million on the Manila Bay rehabilitation.
Students easily falling prey into disinformation? Why not reimplement a mandatory ROTC? Oh, let’s also declare the wearing of uniforms optional!
Recent flooding on Taft Avenue? Well, the dolomite beach takes precedence. People will surely find their way home.
Detaining 72-year old Elmer Cordero for protesting because of the loss of his livelihood? Well, he didn’t follow health protocols. Old age isn’t an exception, too.
A 6.1% inflation rate recorded again since 2018? I’d have to disagree; it’s not that high.
Long queues of commuters and massive traffic? Let’s be unpredictable. Why not use cable cars?
Time and time again, our government proved their priorities are misaligned. It’s an unending circus and we are spectators forced to suck it up.
Where poor governance leaves us
If you’re on Twitter, you’ve seen tweets from users wishing they should’ve been just domesticated animals in countries like Switzerland and New Zealand. It’s a pretty hilarious read at first, but your smiles will fade when you realize these musings were posted because of an administration that fails them.
Gusto ko na lang maging baka sa Switzerland kesa maging Pinoy kung ganito lang din ang mararanasan ko sa bansang ito. Kafaguuuur…

Punta na lang tayo sa New Zealand kahit as a cow, jusko. Mas okay pang ngumuya ng damo sa hillside kaysa sa ginagawa sa atin ngayon.

If they could, they’ll reduce themselves to live as animals because they belong to a society with an inhumane system.
If there’s a consolation, if you’d call it that, it’s recognizing that what we are going through now isn’t so far removed from what we’ve gone through in the past.
We were neglected while they reveled in their riches and held their heads high like gods. Our rights have been trampled on. But we powered through.
Filipinos hold an insurmountable power. One that made history. One that overthrew a once revered regime.
We are THE reasons they’re basking in power and glory. Know that we CAN take it back.
