There is a new ‘Filipinx’ hybrid, ‘Pinxy’

Guess like the Pokemon, the Filipinx has now evolved

For a term that is already gender-neutral in nature, why is it necessary to make another word for Pinoy?

Followed by the addition of ‘Filipinx’, Dictionary.com added another “gender-neutral” way to call ‘Filipinos’ or ‘Pinoys’.

Pronounced as ‘pingk-see’, the term is defined by the website as an adjective that relates to ‘people of Philippine descent or origin, especially those living in the United States.’  It is intended to take the place of ‘Filipino’ or ‘Filipina’.

However, Philippine locals on the Internet have always argued that ‘Filipino’ is gender-neutral in itself. In fact, the Philippines doesn’t have gender-specific pronouns. We use ‘siya’ or ‘them‘. We even refer to our spouses as “asawa“.

Although the subject of having ‘ate’ or ‘kuya’ to refer to older sister and older brother and ‘tita’ and ‘tito’ (aunt and uncle) may be brought to light, those are only the effect of the Philippines’ colonization.

Just like ‘Filipinx, social media did not take the update too well, to the point that this time, they find it humorous and ridiculous.

Other terms added by Dictionary.com are ‘Filipina’, ‘Pinoy’, and ‘Pinay’.

What do you think about this update?
