It is a glum day for Philippine journalism

Since the announcement of broadcaster Percy Lapid’s untimely passing last Monday night, an outpour of condolences and grief for the loss of a brave journalist was all over the Internet.

In a country known to be the deadliest place for journalists in Southeast Asia according to the 2018 Southeast Asia Media Report#JusticeforPercyLapid and #StopTheKillings immediately trended.

Percy Lapid was the second journalist to be killed since Ferdinand “Bong bong” Marcos Jr.’s presidency this June and the 23rd journalist to be killed since former President Rodrigo Duterte’s reign.

Journalists received open threats from former president Duterte as they voiced out and documented his violent “war on drugs”, which Mr. Lapid had openly criticized through his radio program Lapid Fire on DWBL 1242 AM.

His recent reports covered the attempted historical distortion and alleged corruption under the new Marcos presidency mentioning the anomalies regarding sugar imports in the country.

Former Vice President Leni Robredo was among the people who gave their heartfelt support to the bereaved family of the reporter.

Born as Percival Mabasa, the radio host was shot outside BF Resort Village in Las Piñas City by two unidentified gunmen on motorcycles who managed to escape according to Philippine National Police spokesman Gen. Roderick Augustus Alba. As of now, the official motive for his unjust killing had not yet been revealed.
