Why it is bad to dress up as Dahmer and other real-life serial killers for Halloween

Unlike Chucky, Ghostface, Squid Game guards, and the Purge characters, Jeffrey Dahmer is a real criminal with real victims

Halloween may be a fun event that people dress up for, but we still need to remain sensitive and respectful of the loved ones of the victims

We understand that in the spirit of Halloween, dressing up in scary costumes has definitely been one of the things being looked forward to. However, it is one thing to dress up as fictional killers or villains such as Michael Myers, Chucky, or even the ‘Squid Game’ guards, and a completely different thing to don the looks of real-life criminals with real victims.

For those that still don’t understand why it is incredibly insensitive to show up in Dahmer, Ted Bundy, Charles Manson, or Hitler Halloween costumes, here is why:

They are real MONSTERS.

As stated above, these criminals are not fictional characters with made-up victims. They once walked the Earth like we did and killed several people who left behind real families and friends. These monsters might have their own biopics that may somehow attempt to disgustingly humanize them, but that doesn’t change the severity of their crimes and offenses.

However, not everyone seems to understand the weight of dressing up as murderers. Among Dahmer impersonators were actors Martin Del Rosario who has since then made an apology and deleted his Instagram post, and Jeff Moses, whose network took down a TikTok of the star sporting the look.

Because of the spike of individuals dressing up as Dahmer, eBay has actually banned the sale of his costumes. This is supported by the company’s Violence and Violent Criminal Policy which states “listings that promote or glorify violence or violent acts, are associated with individuals who are notorious for committing violent acts, are not allowed.”

Yes, the details of Dahmer’s case are accessible to the public and there were actors that portrayed his role but…

Dahmer had a total of 17 victims whom he sexually assaulted, violently dismembered, and even ate.

Yes, the details of his case have been made public, but we no longer need to give him any more celebration. The public does need to know and be informed of these heinous crimes for sure, but it should stop there. We shouldn’t be instruments to reopening the wounds of their loved ones.

This is not to completely put the blame on the individuals but is a call to the media to practice responsibility…

The media should definitely take this as a wake-up call to either portray serial killers for who they truly are: cold-blooded murderers. Leave the reportage to documentaries and the news if biopics can not bring justice to the victims’ stories.

As what happened this Halloween, eBay has been open that their decision to ban Dahmer costumes was not recent. However,  another attempt at a Jeffrey Dahmer biopic only contributed to misinforming the public and magnifying the situation.

It may be hard to grasp, but it is incredibly insensitive to dress up as real-life serial killers, murderers, dictators, or criminals for Halloween. No, it is not just “snowflake’ behavior to call out people that do nor does it spoil the fun in the practice. Fun shouldn’t necessarily constitute being offensive to others, more importantly, the families and friends of the victims.

If you think that it is ok to show up as such, then you are part of the problem.
