Asian excellence at the 2022 Golden Globes
From Dolly De Leon’s nomination, being the first Filipino to get nominated for a Golden Globe, to Everything Everywhere All at Once‘s outstanding wins, and Naatu Naatu, Asian excellence shines at the Golden Globe Awards
And this means a lot to Asians everywhere.
This year’s Golden Globes stood for a lot in terms of Asian representation.
Firstly, for Filipinos, it meant a lot that finally, we have our very first Filipino nominee, Dolly De Leon, for her outstanding performance in ‘Triangle of Sadness’. Despite not being able to bring home the award, Dolly receiving the nod is proof enough of the Filipino’s prowess. She is undoubtedly a trailblazer for many more Filipino talents in Hollywood.
Ke Huy Quan’s three-decade-long hiatus also bore good fruit after his stellar portrayal of Waymond Wang, and all the Waymond Wangs in every universe of ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once‘. The ‘Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom’ and ‘Goonies’ actor then came to win the Best Supporting Actor in Motion Picture category giving a tear-jerking acceptance speech.

Prior to making his comeback, Ke would always mention ‘Crazy Rich Asians‘ as one of the reasons that inspired him to come back to his craft. He took a step away from acting in 2002 as he realized there were not many avenues for Asian actors. Seeing ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ on screen made him want to be up there with them.
Michelle Yeoh who was actually part of ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ as Nick Young’s mother, was Ke’s wife, Evelyn Wang in EEAAO.
After 40 years of being in Hollywood, she also bagged her first Golden Globe nomination and win following her tremendous acting in the film. Not only was Michelle’s victory at 60 iconic, but the fact that she shut down the opportunity for her speech to be cut off with background music by saying “shut up, please. I can beat you up, ok? And I’m serious.” after speaking about years of racism spoke many more volumes.

On the other hand, the three-hour-long action film ‘RRR’ (Rise, Roar, Revolt) by Indian filmmaker S.S. Rajamouli received two Golden Globe nominations and was able to secure a historic win with ‘Naatu Naatu‘ as Best Original Song.
The win is not just India’s first Golden Globe but also the first Asian song to win one. Composer MM Keeravani came on stage to receive the award.

It is truly difficult for Asians and Asian Americans alike to find the right spaces for them not just in Hollywood, but everywhere. Seeing these Asians get recognized for their craft and hard work after so many years speak enough about Asian resilience, talent, and excellence.
