On Liza Soberano and Nadine Lustre: Why does the Internet depict strong women as a problem?

Recently, Liza Soberano released her first vlog where she spoke about the challenges she faced in her career. Although she was grateful, still many didn’t seem to understand her message.

A similar thing happened to Nadine Lustre when she started speaking up about the downsides of having a love team last year, saying she is over that phase.

But why does the Internet depict strong women that only aim to speak their minds and truth as a problem?

Before these actresses spoke their truths, they were among the most loved celebrities of this generation. They may still have loyal supporters now, but many are the voices that also try to bring them down.

For what and why exactly?

A narrative often tossed on the pair is how they are ungrateful and don’t know how to look back to where they came from. Both come from very successful love teams. However, contrary to that, both the ladies seem to be aware of their past enough that they are addressing what went wrong with it after introspection. They never said they didn’t benefit from what the love team brought to their table and even acknowledged what good it did to them and their careers.

It is just ironic how when women want to advance in their careers and further their crafts, the Internet has so much negativity to say and twists their words so much. Whereas when men do it, like many actors who also ventured into other endeavors like producing and directing, they are well supported on that shift and most likely than not, receive little to no backlash.

Sometimes, they’re even praised for it, like Coco Martin in his directorial efforts with FPJ’s ‘Ang Probinsyano’ and now with ‘FPJ’s Batang Quiapo” or John Pratts who is also now a director.

Sadly, women are met with a much different response usually.

In a recent vlog with actress Bea Alonzo, Liza addressed how her work as a solo actress now, isn’t being taken as seriously as opposed to her work with her love team. “My work now as a solo artist isn’t being taken as seriously and is seen as negative. They think I’m some type of wild child now just because I’m not in a love team or I’m not seen around the same man constantly.”

Before speaking out, Nadine and Liza would always be asked for authenticity, but now they are showing such, and not that many people are receptive to it, which is something we all need to work on if we also want to see growth and development in our local shows and movies.

The Internet’s take on Nadine and Liza now may be because of cognitive dissonance. This, as explained by Michael Karson, Ph.D., a professor of Psychology at the University of Denver, according to his behavioristic understanding of Gender Theory, is simply because these women said something smart. And according to cognitive dissonance, some may have reasons to believe that women shouldn’t say smart things, hence they resort to marginalizing the women or denying that what they said was smart or makes sense.

Undeniably, the Philippines is still a very patriarchal society which may contribute to this take on strong women voicing out.

The Philippines is also among the most active on social media but admittedly lacks proper reading comprehension at times which sometimes causes misinterpretation of what media portrays. As women speak their minds, Nadine and Liza are prone to having their words taken out of context and although the two have been under the spotlight and in the eye of public attention, they don’t deserve this and deserve better.
