Drew Barrymore and Madison Beer get candid about attempting suicide

Content warning: This article contains mention of suicide.

Drew Barrymore and Madison Beer found themselves connecting over something dark they went through in the past.

While Madison was a guest on the Drew Barrymore Show, she opened up about how she struggled with suicidal thoughts. The 24-year-old said that she was ideating suicide for what felt like a year.

“It felt very normal to me to think about that at the end of every day, and then that wasn’t until I ended up actually making an attempt. It was, thankfully, obviously unsuccessful,” Madison shared. “I don’t know, it just all became too much and that’s when I also decided, ‘Okay, clearly there’s something more for me to live for.'”

The Reckless singer also admitted that she attempted to take her life twice. This was something she had in common with Drew, who also got candid about suicidal ideation.

“I don’t know if I wanted to leave the earth, I was so desperate that I did not know where else to turn,” the 48-year-old actress said.

Asked about how she pulled herself out of those dark moments, Madison said she did a lot of work on her inner child. “I started healing the little girl in me very seriously and that was something I dove in head first… I have to start at the beginning of where I feel like this pain is coming from,” she said. The singer also went through mental health retreats and therapy.

Before she was one of the biggest names in Hollywood, Drew, who starred in commercials since she was 11 months old, attempted to take her own life when she was 13. Her mother had her hospitalized which she described as an experience similar to being in a “full psychiatric ward.”
