LIST: Hotlines you can call when you’re in a mental health crisis

Content warning: This article contains mention of mental health problems, suicide, and graphic violence.

When life’s got you down, there’s one important thing to remember: You are not alone.

On the noon of April 12, a 74-year-old woman attempted to take her own life as she jumped on the tracks of the MRT-3 at the Quezon Avenue station. She was found alive and rushed to the hospital for treatment but later passed away.

As the news broke, some netizens expressed their concerns and showed sympathy toward the elderly woman.

Others have also begun to call for increased safety for commuters like adding barriers on platforms.

Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista, however, called yesterday’s incident an “isolated case.” “But pag-aaralan din namin how we can prevent those incidents,” he told reporters.

But what happened shouldn’t just be seen as a safety issue, but a mental health one, too. There is still a stigma in the Philippines towards mental health illnesses and issues. Despite estimates that around 6 million Filipinos live with depression and/or anxiety, they chose to conceal their issues and avoid seeking professional help as it’s “nakakahiya,” a study from 2020 found.

“Please talk to your family, friends, and loved ones. Always make them feel that you’re there for them,” one netizen on Twitter wrote about the incident. “We might not be aware that they’re suffering in silence.
