Hayao Miyazaki’s final film won’t be getting trailers before its premiere

Studio Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki is set to release his final film, titled ‘How Do You Live?’, but there’ll be no trailer or marketing to promote the film.

This move veers away from the usual process movies go through wherein teasers are released to reel potential watchers to cinemas come premiere day.

In an interview with Japanese magazine Bungei Shunji, Studio Ghibli longtime lead producer Toshio Suzuki said nothing about the film will be released until it hits theaters.

“Doing the same thing you’ve done before, over and over, you get tired of it. So we wanted to do something different,” Suzuki said.

He compared the current approach for How Do You Live? with an upcoming Hollywood movie.

“There’s an American movie coming out this summer around the same time. They’ve made three trailers for it, and released them one at a time. If you watch all three, you know everything that’s going to happen in that movie,” Suzuki added.

“So how do moviegoers feel about that? There must be people, who, after watching all the trailers, don’t want to actually go see the movie. So, I wanted to do the opposite of that.”

Only a theatrical poster has been released so far and it is said to be a “big fantastical film” from Miyazaki.

How Do You Live? will be the 82-year-old animator’s final film before he retires. He was actually retired from filmmaking before the upcoming title but said he came back because he wanted to make this movie.

Miyazaki is known for writing and directing iconic Studio Ghibli films including Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, Ponyo, and The Wind Rises.

His upcoming film is set to be released in Japan on July 14. An international release date has yet to be announced.
