Marcos Jr. who benefited from disinformation says fake news should have no place in modern society

Oh, the irony.

“Fake news should have no place in modern society.” This was what President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. declared as he attended the International Conference of Information Commissioners (ICIC) on June 19.

During the event, Marcos promised to uphold freedom of information for its role against misinformation and disinformation, a problem that he acknowledged the Philippines suffered.

“Like everyone here, we too recognize as a matter of principle that fake news should have no place in modern society,” he said during his keynote speech.

Of course, this is coming from the man who benefitted the most from fake news, misinformation, and disinformation during the 2022 elections.

Meanwhile, his opponent former Vice President Leni Robredo was the target of these inaccurate content.

During his campaign, Marcos denied that his camp spread false information about his late dictator father’s administration. “Wala kayong naririnig na fake news (mula) sa akin. Ang dami sinisi sa main, pinapalitan namin ang kasaysayan… Wala naman kami na sinasabi na ganoon,” the now-president said during a town hall meeting in Marikina in March 2022.

At the recent ICIC, Marcos also said the government will create a media literacy program and assured that the country will continue to promote the FOI Program, which was signed by ex-president Rodrigo Duterte.
