Hey look, we’ve finally beaten China – in terms of COVID-19 cases
It’s something, we guess
On July 29th, the Philippines has finally edged out China. No, not on tax-evading POGOs or the territorial dispute over the West Philippine Sea. The President, of all people, has conceded defeat on the latter during his previous State of The Nation Address.
No, the ‘milestone’ here is that, per Worldometers, PH now has 85,486 confirmed COVID-19 cases, surpassing the 84,165 of mainland China, where the virus first began. That’s right, there are now more infected individuals locally compared to the birthplace of the global pandemic. Hell of an ‘achievement’.
As early as July 16, PH surpassed the end-of-the-month prediction made by the University of the Philippines (UP), which stood at 60,000 cases. Now, UP estimates that there will be around 140,000 by the time August rolls by.
Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque teased that changes will be announced on August 1 regarding the quarantine status of Metro Manila, where the majority of the cases come from. He called the region ‘a living experiment’, one he believes will prove successful in the end.
