‘Books from Underground’ is getting revived in MNL’s Lagusnilad Underpass
Kinda missing the charm though
Manila’s ‘Books From Underground’ in the now-demolished Lagunsilad Underpass was one of the main staples of book lovers passing thru the Metro. However, since its demolition in 2018 due to Mayor Isko Moreno’s initiative to clean up the city, it’s been missed by bookworms and passerbys alike.
This time around though, it seems that Manila is bringing back the beloved thrift bookstore as one of the featured business stalls in the upcoming Lagunsilad rehabilitation.
ICYDK, the 2014-founded mini book shop was literally nestled between the underpass’ tiangge finds. It’s almost impossible to miss, with mountains of books serving as barriers and as a quaint nook once you go inside.
Due to its innovation and the people’s love for the small space, ‘Books From Underground’ will apparently be the only store retaining operations at the new underpass.
Mayor Isko Moreno recently shared the underpass’ concept art on Facebook, as the new walkways feature modernized wider spaces, and the tiny book store transformed into a minimalistic open-shelved area.
Moreno initially received flak for the clean-up projects, as it would affect smalltime vendors and businesses around the Metro.
‘Ang gusto ko po ang pagtitinda sa kalye kailangan may dignidad … Gusto ko naghahanapbuhay tayo na mataas ang noo natin, na wala tayong naagrabyadong kapwa.’ Moreno had explained.
He also shared that that ‘Books From Underground’s new life would finally legitimize the business of the beloved bookstore.
‘Yong mga netizen na nagsasabi satin na may matanggal na bilihan ng libro, and all these things, huwag kayong mag-alala,’ he shared during a recent Facebook Live.
‘Pagkatapos namin linisin ang underpass, bibigyan namin ng pagkakataon yung nagtitinda ng murang libro doon na maging legitimate business.’
