‘Boy Talk’ calls out your Tito’s double-standard view on women

It seems that at some point in every boy’s life, he is bound to be on the receiving end of a ‘guy talk’. It’s inevitable, like a ‘rite of passage’, where a father figure gives tips on how to be a better ‘man’.

These talks can be productive: some teach the lesson of taking responsibilities, becoming independent, and other tips on how to become a better person. Sometimes, they also cover the lighter side of life, such as how to turn your crush into your girlfriend.

Now, there’s nothing wrong with getting tips on how to improve your dating life. But when these talks devolve into your Tito bragging about his sexual escapades, or when he prods you to ‘score and collect’ ladies as if they were Pokemon, then it becomes a problem.

The issue is magnified when you realize that not only is the practice justified as being ‘part of our nature’, but the opposite sex is victim-blamed when they do get harassed.

#HijaAko trended for this exact reason a few months back. The hashtag saw issues of women being guilt-tripped for wearing a swimsuit to the beach or heck, just being themselves. It’s an infuriating double standard that society struggles to shake off – one that is perfectly captured by Wonderlast Film’s ‘Boy Talk’

Directed by Darry Ow and writers Cyrene Joyce Laurente and Bryan Nonay, the short film explores a casual conversation between an uncle and his nephew. Lemme tell you, based on experience, it’s as real as it gets.

From the encouragement to collect women as if they were trophies, to crucifying them for what they wear, it’s a scenario that is as old as time. But even such a mentality is ingrained in our culture, Wonderlast Films hopes that change is still possible.

‘Naniniwala kami na sa simpleng boy talk nagsisimula ang rape culture mindset. Sa ganitong usapan nato-tolerate ang pago-objectify sa mga babae’, reads the description.

‘Pero paano kung may isa, kahit isang lalaki ang mag-iba ng tono sa ganitong usapan? May chance pa bang mabago ang “nakasanayan at normal” na?’
