College students left heartbroken after DepEd moves classes to October
In summary: Sana All
By now, you might’ve heard that the Department of Education (DepEd) has decided to postpone classes from August 24 to October 5, 2020. The decision follows a massive appeal from teachers, students, and even senators over health concerns and issues of school readiness.
‘We trust that this is the final adjustment of the school opening’, said Briones in a virtual press briefing, who noted that the extra time will be used to further ensure the successful opening of the upcoming school year.
But while a great majority could finally breathe a sigh of relief, college students, who are instead governed by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), are feeling a little bit left out. After all, CHED Chairman Prospero De Vera III was pretty adamant about the resumption of classes in August, despite the same concerns.
‘No ifs, no buts. Learning must continue. We learn as one, we are ready’, once said De Vera at a press briefing.
CHED’s unwavering stance and uncomfy silence is a lesson all froshes and freshies had to learn at some point: suspensions aren’t as easy to come by on this level, even when you’re literally facing a typhoon, flood, and now a pandemic.
