#DuterteApproved posts are offering easy money for copy/paste work

Wth is going on?

If you’re a curious cat like us, chances are you’ve encountered a Facebook post asking you to click on the hashtag #DuterteApproved.

Doing so will bring you to FB’s ‘Explore’ feed, which then reveals several posts in various buy/sell groups containing the same spiel: You can earn up to PHP 1,800 as long as you’re an active FB user, with or without experience, as long as you’re willing to be trained under a so-called #CopyPasteSystem.

As of writing, no one knows the exact reason behind these openings and why they’re all claiming to have been validated by the President. Many chalk it up to administration-backed troll farms, which wouldn’t be the first of such an accusation. An Oxford study back in 2017 found that Duterte spent $200,000 (or 10 million pesos) hiring trolls to spread propaganda and harass dissenters online.

Numerous articles such as those from The Los Angeles Times and The Washington Post have detailed how troll farms became an influential business in a country that spends 10 hours of its waking moments online. In fact, Katie Harbath, Facebook’s policy director for global elections, once called the Philippines ‘patient zero in the global disinformation epidemic‘.

Still, as they say, anything is possible. Maybe these hirers just hijacked the President’s name to add credibility to their posts. But if the opposite proves otherwise, we can’t say we’ll be surprised.
