Japan will drop 3,000 free anime titles on YouTube by 2022

What a movement

Soon, satisfying your anime itch will be easier more than ever. Per Variety, Toei Animation, Tezuka Productions, and Japan’s other top anime companies will soon upload their iconic titles under one YouTube channel called AnimeLog.

The initiative aims to upload 3,000 titles by 2022, all free to consume by fans. Collectively, the studios onboard have produced classics such as Sailor Moon, Cardcaptor Sakura, One Piece, Digimon, Inuyasha, Ranma 1/2, and Hunter x Hunter.

Currently, the content is only available for those viewing the channel in Japan. However, a trailer promises English subtitles for the shows, which means worldwide access is expected to be available eventually. As of writing, AnimeLog already has 87.8k subscribers since it was launched last August 7.

Reportedly, the first titles to drop at launch include Osamu Tezuka’s Black Jack, Hayao Miyazaki’s Future Boy Conan, and the beloved Astro Boy.

While some of the companies included already have their own YouTube channels, the group believes the collab could grow their audience and revenue more than they ever could individually. The initiative also aims to counter the piracy and illegal distribution of online content.
