Over 5,000 Filipinos are now getting on-call mental health counseling

It’s a valid path nowadays

As the pandemic drones on, more and more Filipinos are turning to non-traditional ways to receive mental health guidance amidst the lockdowns.

The news comes from Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire, who shared that the National Center for Mental Health (NCMH) hotline has gained a considerable spike – with over 5,000 Filipinos calling for counseling since March.

With the pandemic leading to more than 7M jobless Filipinos, halting our economy to a recession, and PH leading SEA’s COVID cases – the so-called ‘pandemic-anxiety has reached record levels.

‘For August 2020, the top reason for calling was anxiety-related due to the pandemic. So it’s being exacerbated… anxiety-related feelings are being exacerbated because of our current situation,’ Vergeire shared in an online briefing.

She furthered that there have been 400 calls to the NCMH hotline from May 2019 to February 2020, but the number has more than doubled since the pandemic started.

The center received a total of 672 inquiries in March, with the calls reaching 1,104 in April, 1,083 in May, 1,115 in June, and 1,034 in July. Meanwhile, 49 suicide-related calls have been made in mid-August alone.

With all the BS happening in the country, free-source mental health tests (which aren’t recommended, BTW) have also made its way to the TL – as the call for proper mental health education has never been louder.

If you need help or someone you know does, call the National Mental Health Crisis Hotline at 989-8727 or 09178998727 or seek online help through the Philippine Mental Health Association Facebook page.
