PAMI’s ‘evolution’ really captures the spirit of 2020

#Relatable

Following the 2019 SEA Games’ PAMI, the government has unveiled its newest creation to meet what we assume is its annual mascot quota. Enter Mr. COVID, a red, grumpy-looking virus, which was unveiled during the visit of the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) to San Pablo, Laguna (skip to around the 30 min mark).

CODE Team Visit to San Pablo City, Laguna August 15, 2020

The National Task Force (NTF) Against COVID-19 and the Coordinated Operations to Defeat Epidemic (C.O.D.E) Team convene for a dialogue with the local government officials of San Pablo City, Laguna to discuss new strategies to mitigate the spread of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) at the community level on August 15, 2020.According to the Department of Health (DOH), the C.O.D.E. is a “patient and community-focused response strategy with key elements incorporated from the Prevent-Detect-Isolate-Test-Treat strategy. Key components of CODE include (1) community engagement activities to promote preventive behaviors, (2) active case finding via house-to-house symptom checks, (3) RT-PCR (Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction) testing for symptomatic patients and (4) Oplan Kalinga application for those needing quarantine and isolation.”The event also highlights the distribution of face masks pursuant to President Rodrigo Roa Duterte’s directive to strictly enforce minimum health standards in communities and to provide 20 million face masks to vulnerable sectors that include households with senior citizens, pregnant women, special health conditions and Social Amelioration Program (SAP) beneficiaries. *****

Presented by Mayor Loreto S. Amante, this bouncing newborn debuted his own jingle ‘Corona Lumayo Ka’ and a couple of men prodding it with ‘distancing sticks’ in an interpretative dance number.

The Internet pretty much had a field day with the newest addition to PH’s ever-growing list of mascots, which includes a giant-sized Bato Dela Rosa. It’s also unclear to whom exactly Mr. COVID appeals to since he looks to be too terrifying to educate any kids, unlike Thailand’s similarly-themed figure.

All in all, the transition from PAMI to Mr. COVID is a good summary of society’s evolution in 2020: from being a casual optimist to a rage monster binging on one bad news to another.
