PH farmers are crafting sustainable face shield frames out of bamboo
Support our farmers
With face shields becoming a hot commodity after being classified as mandatory earlier this month, the pvblic has been undoubtedly scouring for cheap finds.
If you’re down to stay protected and show support for local crafters, a group of farmers from Cotabato City in Maguindanao are rolling out face shields with sustainable bamboo frames for PHP 200 per piece.
Dubbed the ‘Bambuhay‘ initiative, the project by agricultural engineer Junroe Barrios seeks to promote local sustainability while uplifting farmers.

This wouldn’t be the first time that bamboo has been used as possible PPE material. As early as May this year, DOST greenlighted makeshift bamboo frames solely for Cabuyao frontliners.
‘Isa sa mga commodities namin is bamboo so marami kaming bamboo technologies dito sa agency namin’, team lead Cesar Austria had shared.
“Dun sa bahay naman naghanap kami ng materials na puwedeng i-incorporate dun sa face shields. ‘Yung plastic mayroon din kaming available na mga cover ng aming mga reports so we utilized that as our face shield, and then ‘yung bamboo.’

With almost 130,000 cases as of writing, PH’s need for protection isn’t going away anytime soon. Though it may be on the pricier side compared to overseas-made shields, this could be a surefire way to support our local industry while helping ourselves.
