PH Fashion Week called out for #BlackLivesMatter theme
They have yet to respond
Philippine Fashion Week (PhFW) released their latest quarantine collection earlier this week, and some people aren’t too happy about it.
Taking inspiration from the heated #BlackLivesMatters movement in the USA, PhFW dropped a series of photos capitalizing on the advocacy.
ICYDK #BLM was sparked by the killing of African-American George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police officers. The injustice has since caused violent riots and racial tensions across America.
‘Philippine Fashion Week supports #BlackLivesMatter a movement in protest of police brutality, racial violence, racial injustice, and economic inequality against African-American people. #BLM‘, PH FW’s Instagram posts reads.
PH Fashion Week is the definitive bi-weekly fashion runway show in the country. Due to the lockdowns, they’ve since been posting themed collections on social media, with their most recent one titled ‘Mask Hysteria‘.
Meanwhile, people have been singling out the initiative for upholding ‘performative activism’, ‘glamorizing class struggle’, and not including any links to the cause.

I just remembered what this reminded me of. Like a while back part of the marketing push for Hunger Games was these fake propaganda posters. They're like fashion editorials glamorizing class struggles "issued by the capitol." I think the point was to be ironic and outrageous. pic.twitter.com/ZNtQlOxpQK

BLM supporter, pero pagdating sa impunity sa sariling bansa, walang say? Fashion Week na lang sana, wala ng PH. We dont want apathy, nor privilege of the ruling class to represent us.
Yeah, support BLM, but we expect that you use your voice to echo what's happening here as well! https://t.co/BrzuUDfIYE
