Malacañang praises Malacañang for ‘very good’ containment of COVID-19

Who’s gonna tell her

The Palace just gave itself a figurative thumbs-up for doing a ‘good job‘ in its efforts in limiting COVID-19 transmission in the country.

The claims come from Presidential Spox Harry Roque, explaining that the country is still doing a pretty good right now, despite having the highest COVID-19 cases in South East Asia.

‘No country in the world is perfect in this coronavirus and I would say that we have done very good so far in containing it and also in limiting the death,’ Roque shared with CNN Philippines.

‘We recognize that there is continuing community transmission and I’d like to point out that we’ve actually done a good job at containing it somehow given that we have the highest population in Southeast Asia.’

As of writing, the PH has almost 140,000 positive cases and 2,312 deaths, surpassing SEA’s former leading country, Thailand, last week.

Roque continued by stating that ranking #22 in the world’s leading countries with COVID-19 cases isn’t so bad, as other ‘model‘ countries have it a lot worse than we do.

‘Number two, relative to the rest of the world, we are in number 22 but we’re not as bad as countries that we consider as role models including the United States which now has the highest number of cases, the highest number of deaths,’ Roque said.

‘We’re still doing a lot better.’

Roque’s statement comes after Senator Risa Hontiveros’ call for a health-centered pandemic response. – which coincides with the longstanding pvblic call for #SolusyonMedikalHindiMilitar in prioritizing the health sector and mass testing.

Roque’s statement doesn’t come without objections, as a number of critics have singled out the country for its military-heavy protocols.

Taking into account the country’s extended lockdowns and late reaction to the virus, KH-based newspaper Asia Times has dubbed our plans as ‘the wrong way to do a lockdown‘.

Local officials have also raised concerns in improving pandemic tackling, such as VP Leni Robredo previously addressing the nation with clear-cut suggestions and Cavite City governor Jonvic Remulla calling out resource shortages amidst the lockdowns.

Plus, considering Roque said that a 2% mortality rate (2,000 deaths) is a minuscule number, we’re not so sure that we’re doing a lot better.
