PH just got called ‘the land of COVID-19’

Welp

With over 130,000 COVID-19 cases and almost 7,000 new cases every day, PH has been dubbed as the ‘Land of COVID-19‘ by Thailand newspaper ‘Thai Rath‘.

The reference comes after 165 Filipino teachers arrived to Thailand on Saturday, August 8, and a translated Thai article referred the country..

This wouldn’t be the first time that PH has been singled out for our ballooning number of cases, as we’ve been previously helmed a ‘COVID-19 hotspot‘ by Singapore news source The Straits Times.

No, it’s not the kind of #PinoyPride we want.

In light of the article and the discrimination that came with it, PH Consul General Val Roque released an open letter to Thai Rath’s Editor in Chief.

‘The Philippine Embassy wishes to express its deep dissatisfaction over the characterization in the headline of the Philippines in relation to the return of the teachers,’ Roque stated.

He furthered that ‘the characterization is inappropriate, insensitive, and unhelpful’ at a time when all SEA countries ought to work together on the virus.

The newspaper has yet to address Roque’s letter.

The Philippine Embassy has written the editor in chief of Thai Rath concerning the newspaper's headline yesterday. For the Filipino community's information.

With PH now officially leading South East Asia in the highest number of COVID-19 cases, human rights groups fear that xenophobia will only get worse for Filipinos.

Asians have long been the target of racism and xenophobia during the pandemic, as cases of harassment, discrimination, and even violence have surfaced since the virus started in Wuhan, China.

The United Nations (UN) has since called the stigmatization the ‘virus of hate’.

Again, not the kind of exposure we want
