Philippines takes the lead (again) in COVID-19 cases in Southeast Asia

We won… nothing

The Philippines once again has the highest COVID-19 cases in Southeast Asia after the Department of Health (DOH) recorded 3,561 new infections. The total is now at 119,460, with 50,473 active cases, surpassing Indonesia’s 116,871.

PH previously took the infamous nod last April 13, when it overtook Malaysia with 4,932 cases.

The majority of the cases come from Metro Manila, which will be under the modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) from August 4 to 18, following a massive appeal for a ‘timeout’ from frontliners.

Per GMA News, the country has logged in upwards of 3,000 cases for the eighth consecutive day, along with a record high of 6,352 two days ago. Despite the seemingly alarming rate, the DOH has repeatedly emphasized that the increase is expected as the country improves and widens its testing capacity.
