Typical Pinoy Crap calls out the pretentious side of Filipino culture

For all the good it’s capable of, social media is also home to fake personas, holier-than-thou egos, and misguided ‘life lessons’. You have people preaching about how they only have time for ‘deep conversations’, how being a ‘nice guy’ should be enough to woo a crush, or couples pressuring their partners into achieving unrealistic ‘sana all’ scenarios.

It’s a culture that is just begging to be called out for its pretentiousness – and no one does it better than Typical Pinoy Crap (TPC).

Typical Pinoy Crap features single-panel comics that roast our pompous quirks with an amusingly blunt and passive-aggressive tone. According to its artist, 24-year-old college student Edilbert Estanislao, some of the call-outs are based on his own faults.

‘Galing ito sa mga flaws ko na na-overcome at ino-overcome pa lang’, shares Edilbert with We The Pvblic. ‘Nakakakuha din ako ng content sa mga tao na pumpapaligid sakin’.

A fan-fave among Typical Pinoy Crap’s 359k Facebook followers is Aling Tessie, a seemingly demure lola who drops words of wisdom in a way well below her age. The character serves as a parody of the ‘elder statesman’ stereotype.

‘Naisip ko na sobrang nakakatawa siguro magkaroon ng matandang karakter na sa umpisa, aakalain mong pundasyon ng pag-galang dahil sa edad niya, pero biglang gagamit ng mga kabalbalan habang nag-eexpress ng sarili’.

In real life, Edilbert is a bit reigned in with his comments – at least with people he cares about. As he eloquently puts it: ‘Hindi ko rin kasi talaga matiis minsan ang mga bullsh*t ng buhay’.

It’s this low tolerance for BS that defines Typical Pinoy Crap’s success in a platform that tends to get lost in its own pseudo-beliefs. And tbh, it’s a welcome change of pace.

Outside of TPC, Edilbert is a lyricist and vocalist of the band Chasing Blue Cars (a must-listen) and has published his own equally upfront book, TAGOSHe is set to drop another titled ‘G: Kuwentong Malayo sa Katotohanan ni TPC’ which you can read in advance by messaging TPC’s Facebook page.
