Hide yo valuables, ’cause Sept 11 is ‘Araw ng Magnanakaw’
It was only a week ago when the House of Representatives passed a bill declaring September 11 as ‘Marcos Day’ in Ilocos Norte.
This puts the Philippines in a unique position, as it now has a holiday that honors the birth of the dictator Ferdinand Marcos and another that celebrates his fall from power. As Kakie Pangilinan puts it, you gotta love the show of ‘equality’.
it’s more fun in the philippines we have a holiday for usurping a dictator AND a holiday for honoring said dictator equality

Fast forward to today, when the folks at Ilocos Norte are having the time of their lives, social media is also joining the festivities, albeit with a minor adjustment.
Instead of Marcos Day, social media is celebrating ‘Araw ng Magnanakaw’ as people denounced the bill and the man behind a regime decorated with atrocities and billions of ill-gotten wealth.
In fact, Marcos has a spot on the Guinness World Records for ‘Greatest Robbery of a Government’, citing the confirmed $860.8 million plundered by the strongman and his wife, Imelda during their reign.
‘The total national loss from November 1965 was believed to be $5–$10 billion‘, read the statement on the site.
From 1986 – 2015, the Presidential Commission on Good Governance (PCGG) has recovered more than PHP 170 billion (almost $3.5M) of ill-gotten wealth. Several more anti-graft cases are pending at the Sandiganbayan.
Many also used the hashtag #MarcosNotaHero, a statement that has gained notoriety after President Duterte made the controversial decision to allow Marcos to be buried at the Libingan ng Mga Bayani in 2016.

Remembering the 104th birth anniversary of dictator Ferdinand Marcos, whose thievery is confirmed by the Supreme Court and whose rule is officially confirmed by Republic Act as having committed human rights abuses. #ArawNgMagnanakaw #MarcosNotAHero

But amidst all of the jokes, memes, and trending hashtags that will be birthed on this day, the most important thing is that we should educate ourselves and never fall for historical revisionism, lest we repeat the mistakes of the past.
Oh, and don’t forget to check if your belongings are still with you. Mahirap na.
