Wong Kar-wai has finished writing a sequel to ‘Chungking Express’
The director is on a roll
Per Film Stage, iconic Hong Kong director Wong Kar-wai is ready to fill our screens with some more serious melancholy, as he’s reportedly finished writing a follow-up to the 1994 classic ‘Chungking Express’.
The news first broke in Chinese news sites, as an official filing announcement with the title ‘Chungking Express 2020’ has just started pre-production.
ICYDK, ‘Chungking Express‘ follows the two separate stories of lovelorn characters Faye and He Zhiwu. Rather than showcasing the bright spectacles of relationships, it takes viewers into its typically mundane aftermath.
The China Film Administration has also approved the script for the project back in April, with a brief synopsis as follows:
‘In 1990s Hong Kong, the lovelorn Policeman No. 223 encounters a blonde female assassin. They only spend a short time together overnight. The Policeman No. 663, getting over a failed relationship, has his life gradually changed by a “dreamer” who broke into his apartment.’
‘In Chongqing in 2036, young Xiaoqian and May are unwilling to be matched with their genetically-assigned partner, and are determined to find their own destiny.’
Out of Wong Kar-wai’s past films, the plot is most reminiscent of 2004’s ‘2046‘, which reverts between futuristic and past events.
This serves as Wong’s second reimagining of his former films, as his latest film ‘Blossoms‘ has been teased as a type of sequel to the equally-classic hit ‘In The Mood for Love.’
