‘Books from Underground’s OG bookseller is back in his post
‘AJ is back!’
AJ Laberinto, the original owner and main bookseller of the once-demolished ‘Books From Underground’ store in Manila’s Lagunsilad Underpass, is officially back in his post.
Fulfilling our August wish that the city rehires the underpass’ familiar sellers, Manila Mayor Isko Moreno took to Facebook to announce AJ’s return to his newly-upgraded bookstore.

ICYDK, ‘Books From Underground‘ once served as a Manila bookworm’s staple, with stacks and stacks of books serving as a small but comfortable nook for its many visitors. Since Lagunsilad Underpass’ 2018 demolition and 2019 rehabilitation, it’s been given a new life.
‘Yong mga netizen na nagsasabi satin na may matanggal na bilihan ng libro, and all these things, huwag kayong mag-alala,’ Isko explained in August of last year.
‘Pagkatapos namin linisin ang underpass, bibigyan namin ng pagkakataon yung nagtitinda ng murang libro doon na maging legitimate business.’
The bookstore still hasn’t officially opened amidst the pandemic – but if its AJ-approved, we’ll trust that it’ll hold the same charm (and book recos).
