Facebook is banning anti-vaccine content

After planning to ban content that denies the Holocaust, Facebook is now cracking down on other forms of widespread misinformation. This time around, they will no longer be allowing anti-vaccination ads on the platform.
The move comes from an update on Facebook’s policy, which aims to combat the spread of false news amidst the pandemic.
However, anti-vaxxers can still debate to their heart’s desire as discussions can still appear organically on the site – just not in ad-form.
‘Our goal is to help messages about the safety and efficacy of vaccines reach a broad group of people, while prohibiting ads with misinformation that could harm public health efforts,’ said Facebook’s health initiatives head Kang-Xing Jin.
‘We don’t want these ads on our platform.’
Meanwhile, some still find fault in the decision to just remove ads, as it still gives the space for user’s unfiltered personal posts that can reach a wide audience.
‘I understand where they are coming from that they want to promote civil engagement but at the same time, if their intention is to reduce the amount of anti-vaccine misinformation, they are not addressing the largest source of that misinformation,’ explained George Washington University’s David Broniatowski.
