I dunno much about Miss Universe, so I rooted for Miss Manila
Pageant season just went by and as always, Filipinos scrutinized it better than they do with their politicians. And much like a lot of straight guys, I was clueless. So far, all I know is that our Miss Universe PH looks absolutely gorgeous. Oh, and apparently, there are allegations of cheating afoot? And a candidate was supposedly too hurt to attend a press conference?
Drama, drama, and more drama.
In my half-hearted attempt to get in the know, I eventually found myself rooting for Miss Manila. Not because I felt that she would win. Let’s be real here, she is the farthest thing from what these glamour events are looking for.
‘But Gelo’, you’ll say, ‘there are far better candidates to stan. There’s even one who’s openly and proudly bisexual. Support her, you f*cking bigot’.
First of all, I just recently wrote an essay about how we should all be chill about same-sex unions, so calm tf down, please. I rooted for Miss Manila because sometimes, we just need something light-hearted for a change. God knows this dour year calls for it.
She comes off as super casual, the type of friend who’ll randomly pop up at your house but you won’t be pissed about it. She’ll share her own kwentos, while probably being very animated and totally void of pretentiousness.
‘Kailangan ko huminga, okay?’ ‘Ang lamig kasi… pinapapatay ko yung aircon kanina, wala palang aircon. Sige ang dami kong chika’. Call her anything you want, kalog, (endearingly) jologs, kwela, she is THAT girl.
She’ll then ask about your day while lowkey slipping you your 5th shot of the night. As the Internet puts it, while everyone is spilling tea, Miss Manila is spilling alcohol at what looks like an afterparty.

While Miss Manila didn’t come close to winning the crown, she definitely won a seat at our next mañanita after this pandemic is over. Thanks for lightening the mood Miss Manila, our souls definitely needed it.
