The Duterte administration seems to have revealed its stance on dealing with rulebreakers when it tapped Major General Debold Sinas as its new chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP).
Sinas is notorious for his mañanita controversy, where he was caught hosting a birthday party in the middle of the pandemic. He and 18 others are facing criminal charges for the breach of quarantine protocols on social gatherings, physical distancing, and the wearing of masks.
Per Rappler, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque, who revealed Sinas’ promotion in a press briefing, justified the move by claiming ‘No one’s perfect‘. Roque added that the complaints against Sinas will still push through despite the development.
This was not the first time fortune favored Debold. Current PNP Chief Camilo Cascolan, who Sinas will succeed on Nov 10, earlier endorsed the latter for his expertise in ‘the training of personnel and training of recruits’.
President Duterte also pardoned Sinas’ mañanita blunder based on merit during the onset of the controversy, calling him a ‘good and honest’ officer amidst calls for resignation. Duterte also argued that Sinas is too valuable in the fight against COVID-19 to be replaced.
Meanwhile, the pvblic is currently fuming over the news, with the keyword ‘Only in the Philippines’ trending on social. Many rue the govt’s blatant disregard of appropriate consequences and the lack of accountability.
