Even online, ABS-CBN is getting shut down
Give ABS-CBN a break challenge
After going off-air following the questionable rejection of its franchise renewal, ABS-CBN moved many of its programs online. For a while, it worked. TV Patrol, for instance, clocked in more than 8.2 million views in its social media rebirth across different channels.
The extensive reach of its news and public affairs has always been one of ABS-CBN’s strengths, especially with its coverage of pressing national issues, such as the recent Typhoon Rolly.
However, this didn’t last long, as ABS-CBN News has apparently been taken down on YouTube. Search results would either merit a ‘404 not found’ or a notice indicating that the termination is due to a violation of YouTube’s Terms of Service.
ABS-CBN has since divulged that they are working with YouTube to resolve the problem. On the other hand, its news page on Facebook remains unaffected.
The shutdown of ABS-CBN not only triggered political outcries but also highlighted the so-called ‘information gap’ left behind by the network. ABS-CBN’s regional offices, responsible for disseminating vital news in far-flung provinces, were also shuttered due to the failed bid for a franchise.
