Spend your weekend with this hilarious PH stand-up show for a cause

<b> PH comedy is still alive and well, even amidst the pandemic </b>

Fun fact:

One of the last pvblic gatherings I attended this plague year was a stand-up comedy show. It’s almost surreal to think about now: a pack of people crowding together and laughing, no masks and barriers, 10 days before the lockdown.

It’s a milestone now, but that night was just another BLAGAG open mic night by long-time PH comedy troupe SOLIDOK, comprised of honed and up-and-coming comedians in the country.

In case you need that nostalgic pre-pandemic atmosphere back, show headliner Red Ollero has released the pay-per-per video ‘Red Ollero Live at The Paper Lantern’ with full proceeds going to Typhoon victims through Tulong Kabataan.

Red, who opened for JoKoy’s ‘Just Kidding World Tour’ concert in Manila, planned to release the the recorded video as a full special by the end of 2020, but has since decided to release 35-minute set solely for donations.

Stand-up comedy is a craft in it and of itself, a balancing act between relatable storytelling and hitting that sweet unpredictable punchline. With his deadpan delivery and impeccable timing, Red narrates everything from being a fat kid disappointed by the taste of ostia ‘kasi medyo hinype up nila‘, to what if Jose Rizal’s El Filibusterismo got a Netflix adaptation.

‘Seriously kung naging Netflix series [El Fili], episode one to four: Tinola I, Tinola II, part 3, part 4. Season 1 bbinge watch mo, tinola lang nangyari.’

Comedy in the country is so rarely raved about as we’ve succumbed to the likes of celebrity-populated variety shows and crude jokes (often from the President) to define our sense of humor.

But much like with any art form, it’s the little pocket communities that make the culture thrive – with groups like SOLIDOK and people like Red adapting amidst the pandemic.

So far, Red’s show has raised over PHP 30,000 for the cause, and it’s showing no signs of stopping until the pay-per-view’s end of air on December 14.

For PHP 100 to PHP 1,000, it’s a foolproof way to enjoy your weekend, support local comediands, and give back when we need it most.
