Thailand sparks protests after banning Pornhub
Nothing’s sacred anymore
Per CNN, the decision of Thailand to ban access to more than 190 pornographic sites such as Pornhhub has triggered protests from the general populace. Considering that Thais spent the most hours on the site more than any other nationality in 2019, the outrage isn’t exactly a surprise.
The hashtag #SavePornhub and another that translates to #HornyPower trended on Thai Twitter, with tweets slamming the censorship and the loss of the freedom to choose, along with calls for demonstrations.
Dozens of protesters took up the call and protested in front of the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society in Bangkok, complete with Pornhub T-shirts and banners promoting ‘reclaim pornhub’ or ‘free pornhub’.
However, Digital Minister Puttipong Punnakanta said that porn and gambling websites are illegal under Thailand’s cybercrime law. Youth groups have long accused the current government of a dictatorship-like stance on digital content, as it has often handed out bans due to cultural and political reasons.
