Netflix is giving ‘Winx Club’ the ‘Riverdale’ treatment

Edgy teen drama 3.0

We’ve finally got a first look at the Winx Club series that Netflix teased more than a year ago – and it’s exactly what you’d come to expect from the streaming platform.

Called ‘Fate: The Winx Saga’, the trailer promises a grittier, darker take on your childhood fave coupled with mysticism and teen drama. It’s Harry Potter meets Riverdale meets Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

Granted, it’s not exactly far from the source material, which is about a group of fairies who experience love and misadventures while honing their powers at a magical boarding school. But while we’re willing to give the series a shot, the Internet is the opposite, as they’ve already gone to decry the seeming lack of diversity and fashion sense.

People are notably slamming the absence of Asian and Latina characters, Musa and Flora. The current Club roster consists of Abigail Cowen (Bloom), Hannah van der Westhuysen (Stella), Precious Mustapha (Aisha), Eliot Salt (Tera), and Elisha Applebaum (Musa).

Still, we’re giving the benefit of the doubt, as Netflix has a good track record when it comes to representation. Maybe we’ll see new characters down the line? In any case, ‘Fate: The Winx Saga‘ premieres on Jan 22, 2021.
