‘Shrek’ has been preserved for being ‘historically and culturally significant’

Shrek is life – literally

Everyone’s fave grumpy ogre and meme grinder ‘Shrek’ has been officially been tagged by the US Library of Congress as historically, culturally or aesthetically significant‘. This means that the 2001 film, which features a donkey having literal coitus with a dragon, will be preserved at the National Film Registry for the enjoyment of future m̶e̶n̶t̶a̶l̶l̶y̶-̶s̶c̶a̶r̶r̶e̶d̶ generations.

Each year since 1989, the Library of Congress preserves 25, decades-old movies, documentaries, newsreels, music videos, and other forms of film deemed best to represent the diversity of American cinema. This year, the list includes the Stanley Kubrick classic The Clockwork Orange, the G.O.A.T of superhero movies The Dark Knight, Best Picture Winner The Hurt Locker, and the 1913 silent film, Suspense.

The nod for Shrek is not only a milestone but also a rarity. As Mic points out, Shrek is the only animated entry of the 2000s that made the cut. Yup, the physical embodiment of Internet culture apparently surpasses anything made by Disney or Pixar from 2000-2010.

‘The charm and magic of Shrek seemed extraordinary upon its initial release almost 20 years ago — and its power has yet to diminish in the intervening years‘, writes the National Film Registry, which we think roughly translates to ‘Thank you memers for making this happen’.
