Twitch adds ‘simp’, ‘virgin’ to banned insults
Sorry, s*mps
Live streaming site Twitch has added a new slew of words to their banned insult list, and it’s as 2020 as it gets.
Focusing on the takedown of ‘sexually-focused terms‘, the platform will officially ban ‘simp‘, ‘incel‘, and ‘virgin‘ when used in the context of insulting someone on chat or during someone’s live stream.
‘Using these terms on their own wouldn’t lead to an enforcement but we would take action if they were used repeatedly in a harassing manner,’ Twitch said in a statement.
‘We have a stricter policy on emotes overall because they can be used across Twitch so we take more proactive measures to minimize the potential for harm.’
ICYDK, ‘simp‘ is defined as a man who’s ‘pathetically submissive’ to women, and ‘incel‘ is short for ‘involuntary celibate‘, an Internet subculture with the sole purpose of being hostile towards women who don’t even want them in the first place. You likely probably already know what a virgin is.
The three terms have been rampant on the streaming site, and some think it could be a challenge for the platform to navigate its banning. Whatever’s Twitch plan may be, the new policy will still take effect on January 22, 2021.
