America finally came to their senses, we still have time to do the same
Welcome to Cultural Commentary, a 23-year old’s attempt at ruminating over cultural trends and ‘getting’ online shenanigans. These essays, like her 20’s, sometimes have no right answers and satisfying conclusion just yet – and that’s okay. It’s much more fun that way.

If you’ve ever been lingering around the international internet waves, you’d likely see dozens of content around the Inagauruation of the USA’ 46th President Joseph Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.
Aside from the epic #BernieMittens meme and the complete lack of Trumps in the scene, a resounding breath of relief rippled from the Americans on January 20 as President Biden took his oath and vanquished the evil at last.
In first speech as the President, he reminded Americans of the chaos from the last four years, the division and turmoil that’s set the stage for Trump’s second impeachment. A nation divided, given a second chance of life.
‘We have learned again that democracy is precious. Democracy is fragile and at this hour, my friends, democracy has prevailed.’
You don’t need to be a US citizen to know that everything that happens to their country eventually ripples around the world. Heck, even their nail-biting election results gave us collective anxiety for the future of foreign relations.
This time though, instead of that familiar feeling of dread, I can’t help but feel a twinge of hope (and jealousy) for their current situation. A new administration won’t automatically mean a new system and the erasure of their dark history, but it’s definitely a relief to know that your home is no longer run by a tyrannical man-child. He’s no longer President, we can say that now.
Yet Biden and Harris are no stan-worthy icons, by all means, I honestly didn’t appreciate Time marking them’s Persons of the Year so soon. No politician is worth idolizing for simply doing their job. Still, they’re undoubtedly a breath of fresh air for a country that seems to have been gone far too long. A politician following actual pandemic health standards? Say it ain’t so.
Despite this feeling of hope and jealousy in me, I know that if America can lead their country to a (hopefully) better place after the circus, who’s to say we can’t do the same for the Philippines?
I know the usual rebuttals of ‘hindi naman kayo nakokonteno eh’ and ‘para ano? ipuna din?’ but there will always be criticizers of the government – and that’s perfectly alright. Dissent is the backbone of democracy, and it takes a collective effort to have a community with leaders that have our best interests at heart.
Despite the chaos there is now, there’s still time for us to turn this thing around. Not just so we won’t be stuck with dumbasses again, but so we won’t be stuck on this endless cycle of traditional politicians and non-transparency.
We’ve had the whole (ongoing) pandemic to be awakened – and we have until September 30, 2021 to register to vote for the next set of leaders of the country, your city, and your baranggays.
Let’s not pass this up, not again
