‘Ang Probinsyano’ needs to stop pretending they’ll kill off Cardo

It’s basically a fetish

I’ve only watched the live-action anime ‘Ang Probinsyano’ twice during its entire 5-year run. The first is when it dropped on Netflix and the second is during Baron Geisler’s stint, when the show went from ridiculous to a meme goldmine. I can still remember when my feed was littered with people asking ‘NASAAN ANG SABAW?!‘

Throughout Ang Probinsyano’s run, Cardo has been shot, stabbed, and survived enough ordeals to rival Juan Ponce Enrile’s claim to immortality. The latest episode was no different, as it saw the supposed ‘death’ of our protagonist and his wife Alyana, played by Yassi Pressman.

This episode broke online viewership records, notched 1.6 million views on YouTube, and trended on social media for a while. The level of hype this series gets nearly half a decade on astounds me, especially when it comes to Cardo’s demise since we should know by now that that’s probably never gonna happen. Alyana’s death is one thing, as Yassi seems to have teased her departure on her IG.

There is no hate here, just to be clear. Any creative that can create an enduring piece of content, to the point they’re practically squeezing blood from a stone, deserves a level of respect. Plus, given the pandemic, job security for media peeps is a plus.

But I’m fairly certain that at this point, people are tuning in, not to root for Cardo to survive, but to see if he’s actually going to bite the dust. ‘Death’ is the real victim here, ’cause he keeps getting ghosted by a promise that the producers have no intention of keeping.

As the least-qualified ‘Ang Probinsyano’ viewer, I’m hoping they send Cardo into space. Or make him ride a jet ski to the West PH sea. F*ck it, fulfill every Filos wish and make him join The Avengers, where he plays as Asian Deadpool.

Do anything other than the ‘Cardo dies’ cliffhanger. It shouldn’t be too hard. ‘Ang Probinsyano’ has always been an expert in suspending our disbelief, such as the episode where honest cops decided to hold a corrupt president accountable.
