Chris Evans might return as Captain America – but should he?

The Internet is hyperventilating right now over the news that Chris Evans is returning to Marvel as Captain America. The scoop from Deadline says that while it’s far from a done deal, the idea is that Cap will return for at least one Marvel film, with ‘the door open’ for a second. The role will also be a supporting one, similar to Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man in Civil War and Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Chris himself has downplayed the report, tweeting ‘News to me’ with a shrug emoji. But fans aren’t exactly convinced, as Marvel actors are no stranger to denying developments until they’re made official. Comicbook.com cites Hailee Steinfield as an example, who first shot down rumors of her now-confirmed role of Kate Bishop in Disney’s Hawkeye series.

Should Steve Rogers return though?

Look, Captain America is my fave, as he’s arguably the most developed character in the MCU. There’s something stan-worthy about a guy whose strongest superpower is not his super strength, but rather his ‘never say die’ attitude and the conviction to stand for what he believes in.

But as much as I love Cap, I’m a bit hesitant to see his potential return. Cap’s story is ultimately about a soldier: He signed up, he fought, and decades later, earned the right to retire with the love of his life in Endgame.

It shows us that while Marvel heroes have god-like abilities, at their core, they are still human, who can get tired of the fighting, who acknowledge their limits, and know when to say ‘I’ve done my part’. This idea of vulnerability is what grounds Cap and other Marvel heroes, such as the always-unlucky Peter Parker or the PTSD-riddled Wolverine. In my opinion, this makes them far more relatable compared to the likes of DC’s Superman.

Cap’s return to action could potentially spoil this appealing trait. Still, maybe we’ll see Steve Rogers in a limited role, like the new Nick Fury for a fresh batch for Avengers. But for now, I say let Captain America enjoy his well-deserved retirement.
