After-work plans: COMELEC is extending voter registration hours

They’re still under target voters

In case you needed that extra hour to fulfill your civic duty, the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) is targeting to extend voter registration hours from 8:00 AM – 3:00 PM to 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM.

In an interview with DZMM Teleradyo, COMELEC Commissioner Rowena Guanzon shared that office hours can stay open until 5:30PM depending on the location.

‘Di na po 3 p.m. ang deadline. Makakaextend na po kami ng 5pm hangang 5:30.’

The move is a clear call for more registered voters, as only 1.17M people have registered since September out of the estimated 4M.

COMELEC has also deactivated over 700,000 voters who failed to vote in two consecutive elections since 2018. Voters with a cancelled status can apply for reactivation thru COMELEC so they’ll be eligible in time for the coming May 2022 national and local elections.

Meanwhile, Guanzon shared that they are considering opening up weekend registration to make it easier for employees. He also called for volunteer organizations to send out vehicles for aspiring registrants, as it can be a hassle to commute amidst the ongoing pandemic.

‘Tinatawagan po namin ang organizations, marami naman po kayong sasakyan baka naman po kayo magvolunteer na kayo d’yan.’
