Callalily reimagines ‘241’ as a story about women abuse

*Trigger warning*

I always saw Rivermaya’s ‘241’ as one of those hugot songs you sing at your lonesome after every heartbreak. The lyrics croon about the one that got away, musing about the what-ifs and what-could’ves. The original music video told as much, which sees a gloomy Rico Blanco pining over an ex-lover.

That is until Callalily revived the song for the ‘Rico Blanco Songbook’ project, which will see various artists reimagine several hits by the OPM icon. In their rendition, Callalily starts off ‘241’ as an innocent love story, which soon devolves into a woman being sexually exploited for another’s monetary gain.

It’s a tragic twist to one of the staples in our hopeless romantic playlist, proving that the motto ‘art is open to interpretation’ holds true. Suddenly, I could never hear the line ‘Somebody owns you now’ in the same way ever again.

According to the director Kris Cazin, the MV ‘depicts one of the dark and traumatic realities faced by women in our society, who are being forced into sexually abusive setups by men at their own expense, which is just one of the many, abusive ways the prevailing patriarchy exploit women for their own ends’.

Expect to see more reinventions in the ‘Rico Blanco Songbook’ project, which will feature the likes of December Avenue, Ebe Dancel, Sarah Geronimo, and more.
