‘Wicked’ is getting a live-action film adaptation (for good)
PSA Broadway fans:
Per Vulture, the film adaptation of the iconic musical ‘Wicked’ is finally getting the green light (again). The adaptation news has been circulating since early 2019, with the production at a standstill amidst constantly changing directors and, you know, a global pandemic.
This time, it seems that the film has found a new director with ‘Crazy Rich Asian’s Jon M. Chu. Hopefully, for good this time.
Chu, who recently dropped out of the Disney+ series ‘Willow’ due to scheduling reasons, is set to replace Stephen Daldry to helm the 3-time Tony-award winning musical. He’s also set to direct the live-action adaptation of ‘Lilo & Stitch‘.
ICYDK, ‘Wicked’ follows the parallel stories of Glinda the Good Witch and Elphaba, the green-skinned Wicked Witch of the West, originated by veteran actresses Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel, respectively.
The show is now on in its 17th year on Broadway, as it stands as the 2nd highest-grossing Broadway show of all time behind ‘The Lion King‘.
The original release date of the adapted film was in December of 2019, with the latest release date still pending amidst ongoing production changes.
Hope Chu can defy expectations (and gravity)
