Filos ask for a rematch after Spanish ship retraces Magellan’s route to PH

It’s been over 120 years since Spain last colonized the Philippines, but it seems that some Filipinos still harbor a grudge against the European power and its more than three-century reign over our nation.

The Spanish Navy ship, Juan Sebastián Elcano, is currently sailing from Guam to the Philippines as part of its attempt to retrace the circumnavigation route once traveled by Ferdinand Magellan and Juan Sebastian Elcano. The journey marks the 500th anniversary of Magellan’s arrival in Mactan and the birth of Christianity in the Philippines.

According to the Spanish Embassy, the Elcano will dock at Guianan, Homonhon, and Suluan in Eastern Samar on March 16 and at Cebu on March 20. These ports were the first visual contacts recorded by the OG Spaniards in PH.

And as with everything, Filos couldn’t resist poking fun at this trip down memory lane. For instance, a post by The Hispanic Renaissance in the Philippines is littered with hilarious comments, with most asking for a supposed rematch.
