Mark Zuckerberg shares the story behind his infamous sunscreen photo
In hopes of avoiding sunburn and the paparazzi last year, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg became a meme instead. With an unusual amount of sunscreen on his face, people on the internet quickly made memes out of the photo from his July 2020 Hawaii trip.
Earlier today, Mashable SE Asia mentioned in an article that Zuckerberg went on Instagram Live with Instagram head Adam Mosseri. They talked about Instagram’s plans on creator shops, affiliate commerce, and a branded content marketplace. However, things took a turn during their IG live session when someone brought up his infamous sunscreen photo.
Zuckerberg shared to Mosseri that he was with pro surfer Kai Lenny as they were ‘eFoilling around.’ He then noticed a ‘paparazzi guy’ following them, so he put on a ton of sunscreen for him to not be recognized. He admitted that it backfired – we think so too!
However, it’s not all bad since we have good old classic memes to look back to. When Zuckerberg’s photo blew up, people compared him to French mimes, the Joker, Halloween’s Michael Myers, and even Mrs. Doubtfire.
